Astelia

Astelia contains some of the most impressive grasses, with solid clumping, sharp-looking leaves and vibrant tones. Astelia plants are originally from around the Pacific region – Australia and New Zealand – although they have also been discovered in islands such as the Falklands, Mauritius and Réunion. In the wild, they are usually found in forests, swamps and at the feet of mountains and hills. In the modern garden, however, Astelia can be found enjoying the shade and livening up ornamental lawns and gravel areas. They also look magnificent in large pots and garden planters. There are around 25 different species and popular varieties among UK gardeners include the silver-green Astelia banksii, the reddish-green toned Astelia nervosa Westland, and of course Astelia chathamica, the “Silver Spear,” which is a perennial favourite, thanks to its handsome sword-like silvery-white fronds. All three look great in a garden all the year round.
