Calamagrostis

With their fluffy feathery leaves gracefully waving in the breeze, members of the calamagrostis genus are unmistakeable. There are about 260 species of calamagrostis found in temperate regions all over the world, distinguished by their tufted grasses and reed-like formations. In fact, the Greek word calamagrostis translates into “small-reed.”Calamagrostis is in demand among gardeners as an ornamental grass, with the most popular varieties including Calamagrostis brachytricha, or “Korean Feather Reed Grass,” and Calamagrostis acutiflora Karl Foerster, commonly known as “Feather Reed Grass”. Both of these species boast attractive pinkish flowerheads, although the former stands more upright. Beds of either variety will add texture and depth to a garden, however. The grasses grow fast on most kinds of soil, providing they are sufficiently drained and are not over-fertilised. They cope with dryness and heat very well and dislike shade. Calamagrostis is perfect for breaking up herbaceous planting and adding a little interest to late summer gardens.
