Generically known as the “Chinese trumpet creeper,” there are two different plants of the campsis genus – Campsis Yellow Trumpet and Campsis Radicans, the American Trumpet Vine. A hybrid form of the genus also exists – Campsis x tagliabuana Madame Galen. All of these varieties have woody vines and pinnate leaves. They are excellent climbers and will soon establish themselves in most gardens with just a little encouragement, providing a very attractive addition to any space containing trees, walls or trellises. Both varieties have exotically pretty trumpet-shaped blooms, although, as the name suggests, the Yellow Trumpet’s flowers are bright yellow in colour, more numerous and smaller than the bright scarlet flowers of its equally pleasing to the eye sister species. As the generic name implies, the campsis genus originated in China and other parts of East Asia, and they are consequently very hardy plants, coping well and usually thriving in bright sunlight.
