A wide spreading tree with large, heart-shaped leaves which emerge a dark purple before fading to pale green. Catalpa erubescens 'Purpurea', the Purple Indian Bean Tree produces upright panicles of creamy white flowers in early summer, followed by long, hanging seed pods which remain long after the leaves fall. The Purple Indian Bean Tree can be kept coppiced or pollarded to produce even bigger leaves.
