Cheilanthes

Cheilanthes ferns are a genus of more than 150 species of mainly evergreen ferns. Distributed right across the globe, Cheilanthes ferns are often found growing in rocks in near desert conditions and will usually shrivel in drought, recovering well after the rains. Cheilanthes ferns are useful for growing in rock gardens, stone walls or containers. Known as lip ferns, Cheilanthes protect the ends of their spore-bearing veins with curling leaf tips, and many species are covered in fluffy hairs as well, such as one of the most popular varieties among UK gardeners, Cheilanthes tomentosa, the “Woolly lip fern”, with its silver-green foliage.
