Clematis

The clematis genus of plants is an enormous one, encompassing some 200-plus species within the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. The sheer variety of the clematis plants available within and without the UK is testimony enough to its enduring popularity among gardeners across the globe – more hybrid strains of clematis are being created every year.Clematis plants are almost all characterised by their status as climbing plants and their vigorous, woody vines, although the vines can be quite fragile in their early years. However, some varieties, such as Clematis Texensis Princess Diana are more shrub like in nature, while others are herbaceous perennials, such as Clematis Armandii or the Clematis Multi Blue. The variety of clematis types can also be illustrated by the fact that some species are deciduous while others are evergreen – particularly those developed in warm climates. Flowers, too, bloom at different times and at different frequencies, depending on the species.
