Cortaderia

With around 25 different varieties, the cortaderia genus is a very well established grass among gardeners, even though it can only be found growing in the wild in South America, New Zealand and New Guinea. Cortaderia plants are particularly sought after as ornamental grasses because they are so tall and imposing – some species grow up to three metres in height – with stunning feathery plumes at the top of their stems, which are usually white or cream-coloured, such as the Cortaderia selloana Sunningdale Silver variety. There are also species which have the most incredible coloured plumes, such as the pink foliage of Cortaderia selloana Rosea – which can make a large clump of the plant resemble a flock of flamingos – or the rich yellow and green foliage of Cortaderia selloana Splendid Star, the “Dwarf Golden Pampas Grass.” The latter is ideal for planting in pots or garden planters, as it is comparatively small compared with its fellow cortaderia.
