Dryopteris

Dryopteris ferns are a genus of about 200 species and grow mainly in the Northern hemisphere, with the largest number of species being found in eastern Asia. Although they are commonly called wood ferns, varieties of the genus can be found in woodlands, by streams and lakes or among mountain rocks. Dryopteris ferns prefer to grow in moist rich soil in shade but will tolerate some sunshine and wind. Dryopteris ferns are mostly deciduous but can remain evergreen in milder locations. Popular varieties among UK gardeners include Dryopteris crassirhizoma, Dryopteris erythrosora and Dryopteris goldiana, with its large and decorative green fronds.
