Fremontodendron

Native to North America, the fremontodendron genus encompasses two species of climbing shrub from the south western states of the USA and northwestern Mexico. The genus is named after Major General John C. Frémont, a Californian explorer and amateur botanist. The two species of fremontodendron are the Fremontodendron California Glory Flannel Bush and the Mexican Flannelbush, named after their regions of origin. The leaves of both plants are leathery with a flannel-like texture, with large eye-catching flowers. As well as the two species, horticulturalists have produced a range of hybrid strains, such as the “Ken Taylor”, “California Glory” and “Pacific Sunset”. Fremontodendron plants thrive in warm conditions with plenty of sunshine and well-drained soil. They dislike shade and should be kept out of shady areas. Once plants are well established, they need very little water and should not be artificially watered during the summer months.
