Herbaceous Perennials Finder A-Z

Perennials are plants that live for two years or longer and once mature, flower annually. In gardens, the term perennial applies to herbaceous plants that form flowering stems each year before seeding, then die back in autumn to ground level, sending up new growth in the spring. A well chosen collection of perennials forms a mixture of textures and colours, both foliage and flowers provide visual interest for months. They can be massed in the traditional herbaceous, featured as specimen plants, or interspersed with shrubs, annuals and biennials in a mixed planter. They can also be cultivated in containers and window boxes. They range in height from low, creeping plants, useful for ground cover, to feature plants such as the Gunnera manicata which grows to more than 3 metres high. Perennials are very well suited to beginner gardeners, as well as to the experienced who can design and plant in an endless variety of styles. With perennials, one can be an artist, harmonising colour, form and texture. A fact that you may not know is that bamboo is not a shrub or a tree but a member of the grass family. As such, the initial stems that a gardener receives will not grow any taller or thicker themselves, but will instead lead to the production of new stems as the root system grows. These new shoots will be noticeably taller and thicker and gradually the bamboo will reach its full, impressive height.
