Humulus

Plants of the Humulus genus are more commonly known as hops, and have a very special place in the hearts of beer drinkers everywhere. The plants are often referred to as “vines” but are more accurately called bines, as they use stiff hairs to climb and attach themselves to other objects, rather than the tendrils and suckers of vines proper. Humulus plants are a flowering genus, the flowers are small and generally best used for flavouring and brewing. For the gardener however, plants such as Humulus lupulus Aureus, “Golden Hop” are of more interest as they maintain attractive foliage all the year round. Humulus lupulus Aureus requires plenty of sunshine in order to reach their full potential and regular pruning also helps to maintain new growth year to year. Humulus varieties are great for covering up an arch or a pergola.
