Magnolia

Magnolia is a large genus of some 210 species of flowering plants, native to east and south-east Asia and the Americas. They are named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol. They are so ancient, dating from the time of the dinosaurs, that they evolved to be pollinated by beetles since bees had not yet appeared. Consequently the flower carpels are very thick and tough. Many species are popular garden plants, including Magnolia denudata and Magnolia grandiflora The flowersare large and showy with six or more petals or sepals, which are indistinguishable from each other. Colours range from white to yellow, pink and purple.
