Recently brought to the world’s attention through its potential as a renewable source of bio fuel, the Miscanthus genus actually contains around 15 species as well as the massive Miscanthus giganteus that is used in the biofuel business. Among gardeners, the smaller, more ornamental species such as Miscanthus sinensis Malepartus, or “Chinese Silver Grass”, Miscanthus sinensis Morning Light – “Japanese Silver Grass” – and Miscanthus sinensis Cabaret, with the thick green and white striped foliage that has given it the name of “Variegated Maiden Grass.” The spikelets that these plants grow vary from red, to pink to white. Miscanthus perennial grasses are mostly found in the wild in subtropical and tropical parts of Africa and southern Asia. For UK gardeners they are useful because they grow quickly and are great for use as specimen plants, or as herbaceous borders. The plants enjoy plenty of sunshine or the lightest of shade. They also deal well with drought and dry soil.
