Related to the grape family, the parthenocissus family of climbing plants contains some 12 or so species originating from Asia and North America. Also known as the “Virgina Creeper,” the genus contains many striking varieties, due to their brightly-coloured foliage and attractive leaves, such as the deep reds and oranges of the Parthenocissus tricuspidata Veitchii or Lowii, or Boston Ivy, or the dark green leaves of Parthenocissus henryana, the Chinese Virginia Creeper. The rapidity of its growth is one reason why experienced gardeners choose parthenocissus varieties for tasks such as covering bare walls or trellises – some species are able to completely spread across a wall in just one season! The vines are also kind to masonry and other building materials, because they attach via suckers, rather than by invasive roots. Parthenocissus plants are also container-friendly, so can be easily grown in planters or baskets, making them a very versatile option for any garden.
