Polystichum ferns are a genus of around 200 species of mainly evergreen ferns found worldwide in a rage of habitats from tropical forests to alpine cliffs, although the largest number of varieties is to be found in East Asia, with some 120 species being found in China alone, such as the attractive Polystichum makinoi. Other popular varieties include the North American Polystichum munitum, or “American Sword Fern,” with its distinctive blade-like leaves, and, conversely, Polystichum setiferum Herrenhausen, the “Soft Shield Fern”. Polystichum ferns can be grown in rock gardens, a well drained border or garden containers.
