Stipa

The stipa genus is a particularly massive one, incorporating some 300 species of perennial garden grasses, commonly referred to as spear grass, feather grass or needle grass. The genus originates from the woodlands and prairies of Central and South America and many varieties since become much beloved of gardeners due to their exotic appearance, such as the wispy Stipa tenuissima, or “Feather grass,” the rich, autumnal golden foliage of Stipa arundinacea, or “Pheasants tail grass,” and the grey-green Stipa gigantea, or “Golden Oats Grass”. Stipa plants work best in temperate areas, as they are not capable of tolerating freezing conditions for more than a very short time. They feel much the same way about extended wet weather, preferring well-drained soil that keeps their root systems dry.Stipa types are a great choice for gravel gardens, planters or for herbaceous borders, where they can add splashes of colour, texture and variety.
