Wisteria

The wisteria genus contains all climbing plants in the pea family that also produce flowers, with about 10 distinct species to be found worldwide – mainly in the eastern USA and East Asia. Unlike climbing plants that rely on suckers, roots or tendrils to attach themselves to trees and walls, wisteria plants simply twine their stems around any support to hand to lift themselves off the ground. In this way they can reach heights of 20 metres and achieve a lateral spread of up to 10 metres – in fact the world record-holder for the largest wisteria vine is in Sierra Madre, California, with a plant of more than an acre across! The attractive clusters of flowers produced by wisteria plants can vary in colour from white, through pink, to lilac and blue – as can be seen with some of the most popular varieties in the UK, such as Wisteria floribuna Alba, Wisteria floribunda Black Dragon and Wisteria sinensis.
