Canna Lilies   Back to Main Categories

Vibrant flowers and attractive foliage
Canna liliies originate throughout tropical and subtropical areas, these are vigorous plants which bring planting schemes alive with their brightly coloured flowers and attractive foliage. Grown for their large, paddle shaped leaves which sprout from rhizomes and strong, upright, reed-like stems which bear racemes of brightly coloured, attractive lily-like flowers. The flowers are asymmetrical, with three petals, three sepals and three showy petal-like stamens. The blooms are followed by a capsule with round, shotlike seeds, hence the common name.

Planting Canna Lilies
Grow in full sun in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and feed well. Plant in the temp2 or in containers. Also suitable in cool conservatories and greenhouses.

Winter care for Canna Lilies
They will survive outside in winter provided they are mulched thickly and planted in free draining soil. Alternatively lift and store in a frost free place over winter and plant out again in spring.
