Topiary - page 1
Topiary is the art of trimming and training shrubs or trees into ornamental or defined shapes. It is a rewarding hobby which allows creativity and individuality in the garden and is one of the simplest ways of creating a strong, bold statement in the garden.
History of Topiary
Originally introduced into Rome, by a friend of Julius Caesar, where it became fashionable, but the Golden Age of Topiary began in the 16th century and lasted over 150 years and was common in the gardens of stately homes in England.
Using Topiary in the garden
Although Topiary is an old art it can be used in many modern landscapes. Basic geometric designs such as solid or divided pyramids and standards with one or more balls of leaves fit well with most architectural styles. The sharp lines of topiary contrast beautifully with natural planting. Topiary can be mixed with soft, swaying grasses, using only shades of green and contrasting textures to create a monochromatic feel.
We are currently putting together an exciting range of Topiary that can be grown in containers or used to provide permanent focal points around the garden.
