A fine tree, slow growing with leathery, aromatic leaves. The common walnut's flowers open late in spring and are bourne in large drooping catkins. Juglans regia produces glossy green fruits revealing a hard shell which encloses the wrinkled yellow kernel in autumn, edible walnuts in older trees.
